UV 9 with SPF 30: what sunscreen actually changes
At UV 9, skin type II reaches the first redness in about 19 min with nothing on. SPF 30 filters about 96.7% of UVB, so roughly 3.3% of the dose still gets through. It slows the damage — it does not hand you a number of hours. Reapply every two hours, and use shade at the peak.
This page deliberately does not publish a "time × SPF" figure. Multiplying by 30 assumes a laboratory application rate almost nobody reaches, ignores water and towels, and reads as permission to stay out. There is no risk-free tan, with or without sunscreen.

Why "19 min × 30" is not your answer
The SPF multiplier is measured at 2 mg of sunscreen per cm² of skin. Almost nobody applies that much — field studies consistently find a quarter to a half of it, and protection falls roughly with the square root of the shortfall. At a quarter of the tested dose, SPF 30 behaves closer to SPF 5. Sweat, water and towels take more off, and the number keeps falling from the moment you finish applying it.
That is not an argument against sunscreen — it is the most effective thing you can put on your skin at UV 9. It is an argument against treating the SPF number as a countdown timer you are entitled to spend. The dose is still arriving the whole time, which is why a tan built under sunscreen is still a tan built on damage.

What UV 9 means
At UV 9 the times compress hard: 15 minutes for type I, 19 for type II, 22 for type III. Reflection matters more than at any lower level — dry sand adds about 15% and water alongside you adds about 20%, which turns 19 minutes into 15.
What to do: Shade between 10:00 and 16:00. If you are on sand or beside water, subtract a fifth from every number on this page.

Do you still tan with SPF 30 at UV 9?
Yes. Sunscreen slows the dose, it does not cancel it, and no sunscreen filters 100% of UV. At UV 9 under SPF 30, type II still receives roughly 3.3% of the unfiltered dose — which is also why sunscreen does not make a tan risk-free. The colour is still the skin responding to damage; it simply accumulates more slowly.
How often should you reapply SPF 30 at UV 9?
Every two hours, and immediately after swimming or towelling. At UV 9 the limiting factor is not the SPF number, it is how long the film of sunscreen stays on your skin — which is why the two-hour rule, not arithmetic, is the one to follow.
