UV 10 with SPF 50: what sunscreen actually changes
At UV 10, skin type II reaches the first redness in about 17 min with nothing on. SPF 50 filters about 98% of UVB, so roughly 2% of the dose still gets through. It slows the damage — it does not hand you a number of hours. Reapply every two hours, and use shade at the peak.
This page deliberately does not publish a "time × SPF" figure. Multiplying by 50 assumes a laboratory application rate almost nobody reaches, ignores water and towels, and reads as permission to stay out. There is no risk-free tan, with or without sunscreen.

Why "17 min × 50" is not your answer
The SPF multiplier is measured at 2 mg of sunscreen per cm² of skin. Almost nobody applies that much — field studies consistently find a quarter to a half of it, and protection falls roughly with the square root of the shortfall. At a quarter of the tested dose, SPF 50 behaves closer to SPF 7. Sweat, water and towels take more off, and the number keeps falling from the moment you finish applying it.
That is not an argument against sunscreen — it is the most effective thing you can put on your skin at UV 10. It is an argument against treating the SPF number as a countdown timer you are entitled to spend. The dose is still arriving the whole time, which is why a tan built under sunscreen is still a tan built on damage.

What UV 10 means
UV 10 is the top of the very high band. Fair skin reaches the first redness in about 13 minutes — shorter than the time it takes to apply sunscreen, swim, and dry off. At this level the useful question is no longer how long you can stay out, but whether to be out at all.
What to do: For type I and II, unprotected sun at this level is a matter of minutes. Plan the day around dawn and dusk, or plan it indoors.

Do you still tan with SPF 50 at UV 10?
Yes. Sunscreen slows the dose, it does not cancel it, and no sunscreen filters 100% of UV. At UV 10 under SPF 50, type II still receives roughly 2% of the unfiltered dose — which is also why sunscreen does not make a tan risk-free. The colour is still the skin responding to damage; it simply accumulates more slowly.
How often should you reapply SPF 50 at UV 10?
Every two hours, and immediately after swimming or towelling. At UV 10 the limiting factor is not the SPF number, it is how long the film of sunscreen stays on your skin — which is why the two-hour rule, not arithmetic, is the one to follow.
